history

After SpVg Beckum used various places in the city as its home ground, the Römerkampfbahn became the club's home from 1958. There was previously a quarry of the former Roman cement works on the site . The opening took place on August 2, 1958. In the very first season in the new stadium, the Beckum team won the Westphalia championship after a return match against Sportfreunde Siegen . In the 1978/79 season and from 1989 to 2001, SpVg Beckum played in the third and fourth class Oberliga Westfalen .

The Beckum team competed three times in the Römerkampfbahn as part of the DFB Cup . The first qualification succeeded in the 1992/93 season , where the SpVg lost 7-0 after a bye in the first round in round two against Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in front of 6,100 spectators. In 1995 the Beckumers won the Westphalia Cup in their own stadium after a 4-2 victory on penalties against SpVgg Erkenschwick and qualified again for the DFB Cup. There the team managed a surprising victory on penalties against Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln in the first round in front of 5700 spectators . In the second round, the Beckum team met the then second division SpVgg Unterhaching and lost 2: 3 in front of 2,500 spectators.

In 1971 the play-offs for the championship of Group 1 of the Football Westphalia League were held in the Beckum Roman combat course. The teams of SVA Gütersloh and Hammer SpVg tied for points had to determine the participant in the final of the Westphalia Championship . The first game ended 2-2 after extra time in front of around 12,000 spectators . In the replay in front of a similarly large crowd, the Gütersloher prevailed 3-2. Another highlight in the club's history was the transfer game for Udo Horsmann on March 5, 1978. Horsmann had moved from Beckum to Bayern Munich three years earlier . In front of 7,000 spectators, Munich won 6: 5. On July 17, 1982, Arminia Bielefeld played 1-1 against RFC Liège in the Intertoto Cup .
