The Historisch-Politische Buch ( HPB ) is a review magazine that has been published since 1953 and has been published by the Cologne historian Jürgen Elvert on behalf of the Ranke Society , Association for History in Public Life eV since 2003 .

The magazine was published between 1953 and 2017 (issue 2) by Muster-Schmidt Verlag , Sudheim. Since then it has been published by Duncker & Humblot , Berlin. The founding editors of the magazine included Otto Becker , Otto Brunner , Ernst Forsthoff , Günther Franz , Gustav Adolf Rein , Helmut Schelsky , Wilhelm Schüßler , Bertold Spuler and Reinhard Wittram . In the 1970s, the Stuttgart agricultural historian Günther Franz took over the sole editing position, which he handed over to the Kiel historian Michael Salewski in 1988 .

Over 1000 well-known scientists regularly contribute to the journal. Over 1000 new publications from the fields of history and political science as well as related disciplines are presented annually in the mostly brief discussions. The magazine appears quarterly as a print and online edition. It aims to offer the specialist public, but also laypeople interested in history and politics, an orientation on the book market. The reviews contained briefly summarize the content of the book presented, take a critical position on it and place the work in the research context.
