Jürgen Elvert

Jürgen Elvert (born July 30, 1955 in Eckernförde ) is a German historian and history teacher and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair for European History at the University of Cologne .

Career

Elvert attended the Jungmannschule in Eckernförde. After graduating from high school, military service in the navy and a brief activity in the mechanical and plant engineering industry, he studied history , English studies , pedagogy and sociology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) and Queen's University Belfast (1981/82 ). He passed the state examination for teaching in 1985 and received his doctorate in 1988 as a Dr. phil. As a scholarship holder of the German Historical Institute in London , he conducted research at Trinity College (Dublin) , the State Paper Office in Dublin and the British National Archives .

As a research assistant and academic advisor, Elvert completed his habilitation in 1996 at the CAU's history seminar. In 1997/98 he was visiting professor at the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck . In 1998 he was appointed a Senior Fellow at the Center for European Integration Research in Bonn and took on a substitute professorship at the University of Cologne in the 1998/99 winter semester. In 2001 he was offered the chair for the history of the 19th and 20th centuries and for didactics of the history of Cologne University.

Elvert's research interests lie in the history of European integration , the history of Ireland and the British Isles , intellectual and cultural history as well as the cultural history of the sea and seafaring . As one of the leading representatives of the new historical marine science ( new thalassology ), he was, among other things, the initiator of the highly regarded exhibition "Europe and the Sea", which was shown from June 2018 to January 2019 at the German Historical Museum in Berlin. In 2013 the European Commission awarded him the honorary title of Jean Monnet Professor of European History . In 2014 he was appointed Senior Cofund Fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) for 18 months .

Elvert is the first chairman of the Ranke Society .
