Michael Salewski (born January 2, 1938 in Königsberg , † May 4, 2010 in Eckernförde ) was a German historian .

Michael Salewski began his service as a seaman in the German Navy in April 1958 . He was one of the first non-war reserve officers who trained the German Navy. He served for a year and later in many military exercises and finally achieved the rank of frigate captain of the reserve. According to his own admission, this period influenced him all his life. After completing his military service, Salewski studied history, Romance studies and philosophy at the universities of Saarbrücken , Besançon and Bonn . He received his doctorate in 1964 under Walther Hubatsch with the thesis Disarmament and Military Control in Germany 1919–1927 . Salewski was one of the first historians to also evaluate British archive material. After receiving his doctorate, he worked on a DFG research project that dealt with the processing of the files of the navy in the Third Reich . He completed his habilitation in 1970 with the first volume Die deutsche Sekriegsleitung between 1935 and 1945 . Two more volumes appeared by 1975. The presentation became the standard work of marine history. For the first time there was a source-based study of the history of the Navy and its position in the Nazi system.

Salewski taught from 1971 to 1980 as a professor of history at the University of Bonn. From 1980 to 2003 he was the successor to Karl Dietrich Erdmann as professor for modern and contemporary history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . In the meantime, he was visiting professor at Tel Aviv University . His academic students included Birgit Aschmann , Jürgen Elvert , Guntram Schulze-Wegener , Thomas Stamm-Kuhlmann and Heinrich Walle . From 1984 to 2002 he was chairman of the Ranke Society . From 1988 to 2003 Salewski published the magazine Das Historisch-Politische Buch (HPB) as the successor to the founding editor Günther Franz . He also published essays on fantastic literature in the yearbook Das Science Fiction Jahr .

Salewski's research interests included German military and naval history, gender history in the 19th and 20th centuries, intellectual and alternative history, and the history and construction of Europe. For the Navy's 160th birthday in 2008, Salewski gave the keynote lecture in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt . On March 8, 2010, he received the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in gold.
