The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Acerenza ( lat. : Archidioecesis Acheruntina , ital. : Arcidiocesi di Acerenza ) is in Italy situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Acerenza .

history

In the 4th century the bishopric of Acerenza was established. In the 10th century the bishopric of Acerenza was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Otranto as a suffragan . In 968 who received Bishop of Otranto by the Emperor of Constantinople Opel to the Bishop of Acerenza permission to consecrate . As a result, the ecclesiastical province of Salerno was established to limit the influence of the churches of the Byzantine Rite . The Acerenza diocese became a point of contention between the Roman Church and the Eastern Church . In 989, the bishopric of Acerenza was therefore withdrawn from the ecclesiastical province of Otranto, which was influenced by the Eastern Church, and made subordinate to the Archdiocese of Salerno , which was influenced by the Latin Church, as a suffragan. The bishopric of Acerenza was nevertheless still culturally influenced by the archbishopric of Otranto due to its geographical location.

In the 11th century the bishopric of Acerenza was raised to an archbishopric. The dioceses Venosa , Potenza , Tricarico , Montepeloso , Gravina , Matera , Tursi , Latiniano , San Chirico and Oriolo were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Acerenza as suffragan dioceses on April 13, 1068 by Pope Alexander II . On May 7, 1203 the Archdiocese of Acerenza was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Matera. The Archdiocese of Acerenza and Matera was renamed the Archdiocese of Acerenza on June 27, 1818 . On November 9, 1822, the Archdiocese of Acerenza was renamed the Archdiocese of Acerenza-Matera .

The Archdiocese of Acerenza-Matera was on July 2, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Acherontia divided into the archbishoprics of Acerenza and Matera. The dioceses of Potenza, Venosa, Marsico Nuovo and Muro Lucano were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Acerenza as suffragan dioceses. On August 21, 1976 the Archdiocese of Acerenza was by Pope Paul VI. with the Apostolic Constitution Quo aptius downgraded to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Potenza and Marsico Nuovo as a suffragan. The diocese of Acerenza was on December 3, 1977 by Paul VI. raised to the archbishopric without the status of a metropolitan diocese.
