Ballhaus Spandau
The Ballhaus Spandau is a disco in the Spandau district of Berlin ( Tiefwerder ). The Ballhaus Spandau at Dorfstrasse 5 is advertised as the oldest rock disco in Europe, which is always in the same place, i.e. without moving.
history
The premises, which were built at the beginning of the 20th century, began as a dance hall, which at the time of National Socialism also established itself as a conference and event location for the NSDAP . It is known that Hermann Göring also visited the building. After the end of the Second World War , the building was initially used as a community center, but later a dance hall again.
In the early 1970s the music that was played in the Ballhaus became heavier and significantly more rock. Ballhaus Spandau established itself as a contact point for friends of hard rock , heavy metal , punk and similar other directions.
Two events make the Ballhaus particularly important: The former GDR band City , known for its title Am Fenster , made its first appearance on West German soil in the Ballhaus Spandau. Many other bands also had their first appearances there. In addition, there learned Bela B. and Farin Urlaub know and later founded the popular band The doctors .
Today the Ballhaus Spandau is a hodgepodge of different epochs and the resulting ambience . This can also be seen in the design of the musical program, which always oscillates between current but always "hard" songs and classics of rock history , as well as in the interior design.
There are still pictures and original posters of legendary rock stars on the walls. The facility is characterized by the fact that it has always been renovated, but not modernized. The relationship to classic rock has always been a great asset to the operators. For example, former young people from the 1970s who are looking for a connection to the past often come to the regular opening times.
The contact to smaller bands, cover bands , communities and the resulting festivals and parties is still an essential point of the Ballhaus Spandau.
Naming
The name was given and exists through the use of the building as a ballroom in the early 1920s.
