Pontone is a village on the Amalfi Coast in the Campania region , Salerno province in Italy .

location

Pontone belongs to the municipality of Scala and is located 290 meters above sea level in a picturesque mountain location between Scala and Amalfi . You can reach the outskirts of Pontone on a connecting road that branches off from the Austostraße Amalfi- Ravello . However, the actual town center cannot be reached by cars. The stairways typical of the Amalfi Coast lead from Pontone into the Mühltal of Amalfi.

history

In the Middle Ages, Pontone was part of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi; a number of medieval houses and ruins still remind of this time. The first European artist to visit the place (1829) was the painter Carl Blechen . His drawings represent the oldest views of Pontone.

Attractions

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Pontone

Next to the piazza rises the medieval church of San Giovanni Battista (redesigned several times in modern times), the main church of the village, with the grave of Filippo Spina from 1346. The medieval church of San Filippo Neri is on the stairway towards Scala. On the way to the Mühltal, after around 15 minutes, you pass the imposing ruins of the 12th century church of Sant'Eustachio , which is situated on a steep slope .
