Giovanni Berlinguer
Giovanni Berlinguer (born July 9, 1924 in Sassari , † April 6, 2015 in Rome ) was an Italian politician .
Life
His father was the Italian politician Mario Berlinguer and his brother was the Italian politician Enrico Berlinguer . Berlinguer studied medicine. As a university lecturer, he worked for social medicine in Italy. He was a member of the Communist Party of Italy , later a member of the Democratici di Sinistra and Sinistra Democratica . From 1972 to 1983 he was a member of the Camera dei Deputati in Rome, and from 1983 to 1992 a senator in the Senato della Repubblica . From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament , where he had been the senior president since 2004 .
