Iglesias is an Italian city and municipality in southwest Sardinia with 26,300 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Until 2016 it was co-capital of the Province of Carbonia-Iglesias , which then became part of the Province of Sud Sardegna .
history
Until the 14th century Iglesias carried the Italian name Villa di Chiesa (German: Kirchdorf). When Sardinia came to the Aragonese in 1324 , the place took its current Spanish name (Spanish Iglesia (s) - German church (s)).
General
The city is the seat of a Catholic diocese . The administrative bodies of the 2005 newly established Province of Carbonia-Iglesias were also in Carbonia . Iglesias is the capital of the Sulcis-Iglesiente area, which was formerly known for its numerous coal, zinc and lead mines .

traffic
Iglesias has a train station, which is the terminus of the regional train line Cagliari-Iglesias . Narrow gauge lines used to lead from Iglesias to Carbonia and the industrial port of Portovesme . In the end they were only used for freight traffic.
The motorway-like expressway SS 130 connects Iglesias with the regional capital Cagliari , the SS 126 with Carbonia and Oristano .
Town twinning
For several years now, the cities of Carbonia and Iglesias have been official partner cities of the city of Oberhausen in the Ruhr area due to similar developments in the area of structural change .
