Location and dates

Villaputzu is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea between 8 and 11 m above sea level and is 63 km from the capital Cagliari via the expressway and 76 km via the mountain road . Large parts of the municipality belong to the military restricted area Salto di Quirra .

The neighboring communities are Armungia , Arzana ( NU ), Ballao , Escalaplano , Jerzu (NU), Muravera , Perdasdefogu (NU), San Vito , Ulassai (NU) and Villasalto .

The name comes from "Da bidda´e putzu", which probably means the "land with the holy well". In the Middle Ages it was called "Villa Pupia" or "Villa Pupassi".

Attractions

The village has only a few white mud and limestone houses for which it was once so famous. The cork and wood crafts are still strongly represented in it. Villaputzu is also known for its long launeddas tradition.

The parish church of S. Giorgo is built in the typical Gothic-Catalan form. There is also a second parish with the modern church of S. Maria in the municipality. Also known is the only Romanesque brick church in Sardinia, San Nicola di Quirra .

The ruins of the Castello di Quirra ( ), the rocks of Murtas , the mouth of the Flumendosa and the port of Porto Corallo with space for 430 boats are located within the municipality, which has a share in the landscapes of Quirra and Sarrabus-Gerrei .
