The Flumendosa is with 122 km (behind the Tirso ) the second longest river in Sardinia . It has its source in the southeastern Gennargentu Mountains and flows into the sea between Muravera and Villaputzu . According to the directions, the “ Itinerarium Antonini ” from the 3rd century BC was located at this river mouth . BC. Phoenician site "Sarcapos" (Roman: "Saeprus"). Presumably from this place today's region of the Sarrabus got its name. This ancient settlement is now usually identified with the place Villaputzu.

The Flumendosa made the Sarrabus a fertile plain on the one hand, but also one of the worst malaria regions on the island until 1949 . This could only be remedied through drainage to drain the wetlands and through the use of chemicals. The creation of two reservoirs ( Lago alto di Flumendosa and Lago del Flumendosa ) in the 1950s also averted the risk of flooding.
