The Gennargentu (Monti del Gennargentu) is the highest mountain in Sardinia and is therefore called its "roof".
location
The irregular mountain ridge is located in the area of the municipalities of Fonni , Desulo , Aritzo , Arzana and Villagrande and reaches its climax in a spacious semicircle of several 1800 m high peaks. The highest is the Punta La Marmora with a height of 1834 m.
geology
The Gennargentu consists mainly of slate formations , which give the landscape a wavy aspect and from which numerous porphyry veins rise.
Origin of name
The name refers to the silver ore deposits in the area (genna = pass, argentu = silver).
