The E.492 series are electric locomotives built by the FS for the Sardinian lines .

history

In the 1980s it was planned to electrify Sardinia's standard gauge lines Cagliari – Golfo Aranci and –Porto Torres . Because of the isolated location of the lines, it was decided to use 25 kV alternating voltage at 50 Hz instead of the 3 kV direct current system used on the mainland for the FS. Between 1986 and 1990 FIAT-Ansaldo built 25 locomotives for the lines to be electrified, 19 of the E.491 series and six of the E.492 series. Technically, the locomotives of both series are almost identical, they only differ in terms of top speed. The E.491 were approved for 140, the E.492 for 160 km / h.

The electrification work was sluggish, only the erection of catenary masts in the Cagliari station and on the adjacent kilometers of lines. After 2000, the work was completely stopped. Because it did not go into operation, the locomotives were shut down for more than ten years because they cannot be used on the lines electrified with 3 kV direct current . Apart from a few test drives, the vehicles have never been driven.

A locomotive, the E.492.004, was on test drives in Hungary in 2001 . The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) intended - assuming successful test runs - to buy all 25 units of the two series, as this was considered more cost-effective than renovating the V 43 series electric locomotives . The locomotives were to be used on the Budapest - Székesfehérvár - Szombathely and Budapest-Hegyeshalom routes. The test drives were therefore also carried out on these routes. After a test phase of three months, MÁV decided not to buy the locomotives.
