Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is an Italian white wine from the municipality of San Gimignano in the province of Siena , Tuscany . Since March 3, 1966, the wine was the first Italian wine to receive the status of a “protected designation of origin” ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC). On July 9, 1993, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano was granted the status of a “protected and guaranteed designation of origin” ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita - DOCG), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

The cultivation of the grapes and the vinification of the wine must take place in the municipality of San Gimignano.

In 2016, 41,285 hectoliters of DOCG wine were produced from 650 hectares of vineyards.

The wine is made from the Vernaccia di San Gimignano grape variety. A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added. The following grape varieties are not allowed: Traminer , Weißer Muskateller , Müller-Thurgau , Malvasia di Candia , Malvasia Istriana , Incrocio Bruni 54. Sauvignon blanc and / or Riesling may be contained individually or together to a maximum of 10%.

For the “Riserva” label, the wine must have matured for at least 11 months after January 1st of the year following the harvest. The wine should mature in the bottle for at least three months before it is sold. Furthermore, a “Riserva” must contain at least 12.5% ​​alcohol by volume.
