List of grape varieties

Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is an autochthonous white wine variety and is mainly grown in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna . In Italy, their cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Piacenza and Parma . It is one of the numerous vines that belong to the large Malvasia family . Most likely it comes from the Greek island of Crete , as the Italian name of Heraklion is Candia and the earliest documented wine trade comes from this region. So far, however, no direct connection to existing Greek autochthonous grape varieties has been proven, as the Venetians destroyed almost all of the vineyards on Crete. Only old evidence from the Venetian occupation indicate a connection. Today Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is grown again on Crete and expanded as a dry and sweet variant. They try to combine the old tradition of wine growing in Crete with the modern.

It is often confused in literature with the Malvasia Bianca di Candia variety . In 1999 the area under vines was 15,520 hectares .

The late-ripening variety with a medium yield delivers straw-yellow to golden-yellow white wines of good quality. It is in the DOC - wines Colli Piacentini , Colli di Parma , Genazzano and Oltrepò Pavese included. It is also used as a table grape .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white, with a slight pink tinge. The yellowish-green young leaves are hairy like a cobweb and spotted bronze.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is very pointed. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is medium to large, elongated and loose berries. The round berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color. The berries have a light nutmeg aroma.

The grape variety ripens approx. 30 days after the Gutedel and belongs to the grape varieties of the middle third ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is therefore considered to ripen late. The moderately vigorous variety is moderately high-yielding. Sometimes it tends to trickle down . Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
