List of grape varieties |
The white wine variety Malvasia Bianca di Candia is one of many varieties from the Malvasia family in Greece and Italy. The variety is very old. Originally the variety comes from " Candia ", the old name of the Cretan city of Heraklion, where the Malvasia wine originally comes from. The white "Malvasia di Candia", which is still grown in Crete today, was brought to Italy by the Greeks and later spread even more by the Venetians.
The cultivation of the variety is recommended or approved in most of the Italian provinces. In Portugal it finds its way into the Madeira wine of the Malmsey variety.
The late-ripening variety is of moderate growth and delivers good yields. The must makes a lightly perfumed wine. The wines are included in the DOC wines Bianco Capena , Castelli Romani , Cerveteri , Circeo , Colli Albani , Colli della Sabina , Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa , Colli Lanuvini , Cori Bianco , Guardia Sanframondi o Guardiolo , Marino , Montecompatri Colonna , Monteregio di Massa Marittima , Scavigna , Tarquinia , Velletri , Zagarolo . The variety is often blended with the Trebbiano and supplemented with the addition of Malvasia del Lazio .
The planted area is around 15,523 hectares .
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open. It is woolly hairy and slightly reddish in color. The young leaves are hairy like a cobweb and colored green-yellow.
- The large leaves are five-lobed (more rarely three-lobed) and medium-deep (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
- The cylindrical to conical grape is large, shouldered and loose berries. The round berries are medium-sized and golden-yellow in color. The berry pod is thick-walled. The grapes usually taste neutral or at most have a very subtle nutmeg aroma .
The vigorous Malvasia Bianca di Candia ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel and is one of the grape varieties of the middle third ripening period (see the chapter in the article Grape variety) that ripen late.
Malvasia Bianca di Candia is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
