Malvasia del Lazio is a white wine variety and one of many varieties from the Malvasia family in Italy. The variety is very old. The cultivation of the variety is recommended in the provinces of Latina , Rieti and Rome and approved in the provinces of Frosinone and Viterbo . All the provinces are in the Lazio region , which is also what gives the variety its name.

The very late-ripening variety is moderately vigorous and delivers weak to medium yields. The must makes a lightly perfumed wine of good quality. The white wines are included in the DOC wines Bianco Capena , Castelli Romani , Cerveteri , Colli Albani , Colli della Sabina , Colli Etruschi Viterbesi , Frascati , Marino and Tarquinia . The variety is often blended with the Trebbiano and supplemented with the addition of Malvasia Bianca di Candia . Malvasia del Lazio is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).

The planted area is around 4,082 hectares .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy with white wool and colored pale green. The light green young leaves are hairy like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three-lobed (rarely five-lobed) and not very pronounced (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cone-shaped grape is usually shouldered, medium to large and quite dense. The round berries are medium-sized and yellow-green in color.

The grape variety ripens about 35 days after the Gutedel and is one of the grape varieties of the late third ripening period (see the chapter in the article Grape variety). It is therefore considered to ripen very late. The moderately vigorous variety is low-yielding. Malvasia del Lazio is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
