Pieve Fosciana is an Italian municipality with 2470 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lucca in Tuscany .

The community lies on a small plain in the eastern upper Serchio Valley in the Garfagnana countryside . The place is about 33 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 80 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone E, 2,448 GG. Important waters in the municipality are the Torrenti Corfino (2 of 12 km in the municipality), Torrente di Castiglione (2 of 15 km in the municipality) and Sillico (13 of 13 km in the municipality), all of them left tributaries of the Serchio, the 5 of its 106 km spends in the municipality.

The districts include the fractions (Frazioni) Pontecosi (321 m, approx. 230 inhabitants) and Sillico (711 m, approx. 100 inhabitants). The main town Pieve Fosciana has about 1800 inhabitants.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document at the time of the Lombards in the 8th century. The parish church was a center of the area and gave the place its name. Pieve means parish. In the 15th century, the place, which until then belonged to Lucca, joined the territory of the Este family . During the Napoleonic period, the places Sillico, Bargecchia and Pontecosi were incorporated. At the end of the Second World War , Pieve Fosciana was in the area of ​​the Goth line .

  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , main church in the main town. The Pieve was first documented in 746 and is said to have been founded by Frediano von Lucca .
