history

The name affix, which the municipality has had since 1862, refers to the Antelminelli family, who ruled here for a long time during the Middle Ages. The best known representative of the family was the Ghibelline condottiere Castruccio Castracani . The place was first mentioned in the 10th century. From the 11th century the place was economically and politically dependent on Lucca and in 1316 it was taken by Castruccio Castracani. The place remained under the control of the Republic of Lucca, except for a few brief conquests by Florence.

economy

Coreglia Antelminelli was from the 17th to the 20th century, along with other neighboring communities in the Serchio Valley such as Barga and Bagni di Lucca , the center of the production of decorative plaster figures (busts, religious motifs, animals, etc.). The manufacturers (Italian Figurinai or Figuristi) of these figures sold them themselves mainly at fairs and migrated as migrant workers through all of Europe (especially France, Germany) and later overseas. The Figurinai were the forerunners of a whole series of subsequent economic emigration movements from Italy.

There are still individual companies in the Serchio Valley that, following tradition, produce plaster figures. The main branch of the economy in the structurally weak area is today tourism.
