Matteo Civitali

Matteo Civitali (born May 5, 1436 in Lucca ; † October 12, 1501 ibid) was an Italian sculptor and painter of the Renaissance .

Life

Matteo Civitali came from a family of Friulian origin with a military tradition. He worked as a painter, sculptor (marble, wood and terracotta) and military engineer. Civitali became famous with the execution of the tomb for Pietro da Noceto ( Tomba di Pietro da Noceto ) in the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca. The tomb was completed in 1472.

The only picture that is known for certain that it comes from Matteo Civitali is the triptych Madonna with Child and Saints (Madonna col Bambino e Santi), executed in the years 1467–1469. The altar is now in Greenville , USA . He carried out practically all of the pictures together with Baldassarre di Biagio .

Due to the success with the tomb for Pietro da Noceto, Domenico Bertini became a patron and patron of Civitalis. Bertini spent large sums of money on the beautification of the Lucca cathedral; Matteo Civitali became the preferred artist. Matteo Civitali's success was not limited to Lucca, he also worked on 22 altars in the Cathedral of Pisa .

Civitali designed fortifications for the city of Sarzana .
