Nicolas Sanson
Nicolas Sanson, the elder , also: Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (born December 20, 1600 in Abbeville , France , † July 7, 1667 in Paris ) was a French cartographer . He is considered the father of geography in France.
Life
His ancestors came from Scotland. In the years 1618 to 1667 Sanson created around 300 individual maps as well as atlases and illustrated texts. He was appointed Geographe Ordinaire du Roy (royal map maker) and taught the kings Louis XIII. and Louis XIV in geography.
His son Nicolas Sanson (1626–1648) died during the Fronde . After the father's death, two other sons led Adrien Sanson († 1708) and Guillaume Sanson († 1703) together with his nephew Pierre Duval (1619-1683), the grandson Pierre Moulard Sanson († 1730) and Hubert Jaillot and Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766) continued the work.
