The Lago di Vagli is the largest reservoir in Tuscany.

geography

It is located in the province of Lucca near Vagli Sotto in the Garfagnana countryside . The northeastern part of the reservoir is in the municipality of Careggine .

description

The dam was built between 1947 and 1953 and is 96 meters high. He dams the Edron River. The associated power plant is operated by the electricity company ENEL .

In the reservoir there were some small settlements, including the former place Fabbriche di Careggine , which at that time had 31 houses and 146 inhabitants. When the lake is drained about every ten years (1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994), the small church and houses reappear and become a tourist attraction as paese fantasma (“ghost village”). The church of San Teodoro , built in 1590, stood in the village .

The pedestrian bridge Ponte Morandi leads over a branch of the lake . The Ponte Tibetano , a suspension bridge for pedestrians, has been crossing the main arm since 2015 .
