action

Guido, a writer whose latest book has been nominated for a literary award, picks up his daughter Costanza from swimming lessons. She tells him that she no longer wants to go swimming, so he takes lessons from the new swimming instructor Giulia in her place.

Guido strolls through his life quite absently and indifferently. Most of the people he meets think his book is good, but no one has finished reading it. He is currently writing stories for a new book, which will then appear on the screen as a “film within a film”.

While his wife Benedetta and daughter move into a new apartment in Rome, he continues to live in the house in the suburbs. Gradually he falls in love with Giulia. One day she reveals her secret to him. She left her husband and daughter years ago for a lover. When he wanted to part with her, she murdered him. She has been in prison since then, but is allowed to work in the swimming pool during the day as an outdoor worker. Once they go to the sea and everything seems to be fine. Giulia tells him how much she misses her daughter. He secretly writes a letter to Viola on her behalf. At a meeting in the café, she makes it clear to her mother that she doesn't want to know anything about her and that she never wants to see her again. Giulia is deeply hit.

The next day she does not appear in the swimming pool. Guido is surprised when she awaits him at his door. They spend the night together. Giulia no longer goes to work in the swimming pool. Guido moved to Rome to live with his family, with whom he now spends more time again. Nevertheless, he misses Giulia, who, however, persistently refuses his wish to visit her in prison.

One day he finds out in the swimming pool that she has killed herself. In the prison, Guido receives a box with her belongings in Giulia's former cell. He reads in her diary, which she had started to write in the hope of a better future - notes about her cautious approach to Guido and her slowly awakening courage to live, to her hopeless despair over her daughter's rejection.

Guido goes to the award ceremony with his daughter. His competitor gets the award. Guido and Costanza relax and eat a whole tray full of chocolates.

criticism

"Director Giuseppe Piccioni is a great stylist, albeit with a tendency towards mannerisms - his introspection, which tends towards dreamlike, is therefore sometimes too meaningful."

- The federal government

“Giuseppe Piccioni creates subtle scenes that aptly depict the creeping disintegration of relationships. But his images of familiarity are also expressive, for example when Giulia and Guido watch other swimmers underwater. Outstanding is the performance of Valeria Golino as Giulia, who seems to carry the tragedy of her life with her in every - even happy - moment. "

- br-online

“Giuseppe Piccioni has a sensitivity that only a few directors of his generation have, and allows characters, atmosphere and locations to merge harmoniously. The level of reality is suggestively crossed by the doubts, thoughts and restlessness of the protagonists. Valeria Golino and Valerio Mastandrea embody the couple with intensity, who can only communicate with each other through looks and silence. "
