Cappella della Santissima Trinità alla Zisa

SS. Trinità alla Zisa

Santissima Trinità alla Zisa is a Norman church building in Palermo north of the Zisa .

history

View of the apse

The building is probably older than the Zisa itself (second half of the 12th century) and is possibly based on a refectory of a Byzantine monastery , which was converted into a mosque during the Arab rule . When Wilhelm I decided to build a pleasure palace on the neighboring site, the mosque became a chapel.

When Guglielmo Ventimiglia administered the Zisa as Seneschal , he renamed the chapel Santa Anna , as this saint was the patron saint of the Ventimiglia family . In 1803 the church Chiesa di Gesù, Maria e Santo Stefano was built directly next to the existing building , which, in contrast to the Santissima Trinità, has the apse in the more common eastward orientation. The existing parts of the building were rededicated as the sacristy .

architecture

The building has a single nave with an apse facing the street towards the west. One tower is missing. A dome similar to the one on San Giovanni degli Eremiti or San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi is placed over the western part of the building . The dome is connected to the building via simple muqarnas .
