Geraldo Fernandes Bijos CMF (born February 2, 1913 in Belo Horizonte , † March 28, 1982 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian religious and first bishop and archbishop of Londrina .

Life

Geraldo Fernandes Bijos joined the Claretian Order in 1929 and was ordained a priest on October 25, 1936 . He later received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Lateran University in Rome .

Pope Pius XII appointed Fernandes Bijos on November 16, 1956 as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Londrina. He was ordained bishop on January 13, 1957 by Archbishop Armando Lombardi , Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil. Co- consecrators were Manuel da Silveira d'Elboux , Archbishop of Curitiba , and Francisco Prada Carrera , Prelate of São José de Alto Tocantins .

With Leônia Milito he founded another branch of the Claretians in 1958, which is now represented worldwide. From 1962 to 1965 he participated as a council father at the Second Vatican Council . In 1965 he founded the Paul VI diocesan seminary .

With the elevation of the diocese of Londrina to the archbishopric on November 24, 1970 Fernandes Bijos became its archbishop. In 1974 he became Vice President of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference . He participated in the second and third general conferences of CELAM in Medellín (1968) and in Puebla (1979). In 1982 Geraldo Fernandes Bijos died in São Paulo at the age of 69.
