The XXXI. World Youth Day ( Polish Światowe Dni Młodzieży ; abbreviation: ŚDM; German abbreviation: WYD) was an international youth meeting of the Roman Catholic Church . It started on July 26, 2016 and ended on July 31 of the same year in Krakow . It was the second World Youth Day in Poland after World Youth Day in 1991 in Czestochowa .

motto

The World Youth Day in Krakow, like the diocesan World Youth Days in the previous two years, was placed under one word from the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount . The motto for World Youth Day 2016 was:

Blessed are the merciful; because they will find mercy ( Mt 5,7  EU ).

At the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro in 2013 , Pope Francis asked the youth to reread the Beatitudes and act accordingly.

program

World Youth Day took place from July 26th to 31st, 2016. The previous week saw the days in the dioceses when pilgrims were hosted in the parishes of the 43 Polish dioceses . The main events of World Youth Day began with the opening mass on July 26th, celebrated by the Archbishop of Krakow. During the week, different bishops gave catechesis. In the evening of Thursday, July 28th, the Pope was welcomed with a welcoming ceremony. A Way of the Cross was held on Friday, which also offered the opportunity to repent and celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation . Before the broadcast mass with the Pope was celebrated on Sunday, July 31, a night of prayer, the Vigil , took place the evening before .

The 1050th anniversary of the baptism of Poland will also take place in 2016 . On this occasion, the Pope visited Cracow as well as the Marian pilgrimage site of Częstochowa .

Wieliczka campus

The spiritual preparation for World Youth Day began in 2013. Regular prayers and church services set the mood for the day. In addition, the “A ticket for the brother” campaign was intended to enable young people from Eastern Europe to take part in World Youth Day in Krakow. An official preparatory prayer was also published.

compassion

World Youth Day took place within the Holy Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis . At the national World Youth Day on Palm Sunday 2015, the Pope made this connection. Together with the motto and the local connection to St. Maria Faustyna Kowalska and John Paul II, mercy was a thematic focus.

Venues

The final fair took place on the Misericordiae Campus , a field near Wieliczka about twelve kilometers from the city center , which was prepared for the major event. The Błonia meadows , where John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Celebrating large masses were too small for the expected number of participants in the closing services. The welcome ceremony for Pope Francis on July 28th and the Way of the Cross with the Pope on July 29th were held in the Błonia meadows. Other major events took place in the football stadiums Henryk Reyman Stadium ( Wisła Krakau ) and Józef Piłsudski Stadium ( KS Cracovia ).

Pope John Paul II , canonized in 2014 , was Archbishop of Krakow from 1964 until his election as papal in 1978 . In a message for the diocesan World Youth Day 2014, Pope Francis described him as the "great patron of the World Youth Days [...] whose initiator and spiritual motor he was."

The former private secretary of the Polish Pope, Stanisław Cardinal Dziwisz , has been his successor as Archbishop of Cracow since 2005 and was, together with the Papal Council for the Laity, host and organizer of the World Youth Day. Damian Andrzej Muskus OFM , Auxiliary Bishop in Krakow, was named as chief coordinator .

Logo and anthem

The World Youth Day logo designed by Monika Rybczyńska and Emilia Pyza shows a cartographic outline of Poland with a large cross in the middle. A yellow point shows the location of Krakow on this map. In addition, this point should represent the youth of the world. The cross and the point are framed by a red and a blue curved semicircle, which are reminiscent of the Jesus image of Divine Mercy , in which blood and water flow from the heart of Jesus. Sister Maria Faustyna Kowalska (1905–1938) suggested this image, which is very well known in Poland, based on a vision. The nun died in Kraków and was canonized by John Paul II in 1993. The motif of mercy chosen by the theme can thus be found in the logo. All three colors of the logo are included in the Krakow city arms.

The hymn of the XXXI. World Youth Day is titled Błogosławieni miłosierni ("Blessed the Merciful") and is a composition by the lawyer and musician Jakub Blycharz . It was selected from over 90 submitted songs. The hymn, presented on January 6, 2015, refers to the biblical motto, to the parable of the lost sheep ( Lk 15 : 1-7  EU ) as well as to Psalms 130 ( Ps 130  EU ) and 121 ( Ps 121  EU ). The respective bishops' conferences are responsible for translations into the national languages . The hymn has now been published in several languages, including German.

The announcement of the venue Krakow took place on July 27, 2013 as part of the closing event of the XXVIII. World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro by Pope Francis .

“Dear young friends, for the next World Youth Day, in 2016, we have an appointment in Krakow, Poland. On the maternal intercession of Mary, we ask for the light of the Holy Spirit on the way that will bring us to this new stage of the joyful celebration of the faith and love of Christ. "

- Pope Francis : Angelus on July 27, 2013 in Rio de Janeiro

There were happy reactions in Poland. Cardinal Dziwisz declared: “Holy Father, we are waiting for you and your young friends from all over the world”.

Father Stefan Dartmann SJ , then chief executive of Renovabis , the solidarity campaign of the German Catholics with the people in Central and Eastern Europe, spoke of a "homage to the inventor" of the World Youth Days Pope John Paul II. He also hopes for greater attention to be paid to social problems in Central and Eastern Europe. Krakow, however, is a “city in the heart of Europe”, and World Youth Day will bring this back into focus.
