Stefan Dartmann SJ , (born December 26, 1956 in Gelsenkirchen-Buer ) is a German Jesuit . From 2004 to 2010 he was Provincial of the German Province of the Jesuits. Since July 2015 he has been rector of the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , the German-speaking seminary in Rome .

Life

education

After graduating from the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen-Buer in 1975 , Stefan Dartmann joined the Episcopal Seminary Collegium Borromaeum Münster in Münster / Westphalia as a candidate for the priesthood of the diocese of Münster . He studied Catholic theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . After completing his intermediate diploma, he studied theology for two semesters in Jerusalem , entered the north German province of the Jesuits in 1978 and, after a two-year novitiate in Münster, made his first vows in 1980 . From 1980 to 1982 he studied philosophy at the Munich School of Philosophy . After the two-year internship in church youth work and social work with addicts in Sweden , he completed his theology studies in 1986 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main with a diploma. He then studied at the Faculty of Religious Studies at Uppsala University . In 1986 he was ordained a priest in Stockholm and then worked for two years as a chaplain at the parish of St. Eugenia in Stockholm, which is looked after by the Jesuit order; from 1993 to July 2004 he was the pastor at St. Eugenia in Stockholm. In 1992/93 he completed his tertiary education, the last period of training for the Jesuits in Salamanca (Spain). In 1994 he took his last religious vows in Stockholm.

He also received classical training in flute and organ and passed the C examination in church music as an organist and choir director.

Provincial of the United German Provinces

Stefan Dartmann was appointed the first Provincial of the united German provinces in 2004 by the Superior General of the Jesuit Order in Rome, Peter Hans Kolvenbach . On September 1, 2010, after a six-year term in office, Stefan Kiechle became his successor as Provincial.

The Provincial has its seat in the Provincialate of the German Jesuits in Munich . He has the management responsibility for the z. Currently about 450 Jesuits who belong to this order province. On July 31, 2004, the two German provinces of the Jesuit Order were united. This new German order province comprises the territory of Germany , Denmark and Sweden .

In his capacity as Provincial, Stefan Dartmann was the representative of the institution at the two German universities of the Jesuits: the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Philosophy in Munich .

In the abuse scandal of the Catholic Church , Dartmann, as provincial of the German Jesuits, sided with the educators around Klaus Mertes , who, as head of the Berlin Canisius College, had made the attacks public in early 2010. Representing the order, Dartmann had acknowledged the responsibility of the Jesuits.

General Manager of Renovabis

On June 22, 2010, Stefan Dartmann was appointed by the German Catholic bishops for the period from November 1, 2010 to October 31, 2015 as the general manager of Renovabis , the solidarity campaign of German Catholics with the people of Central and Eastern Europe. Dartmann handed over his office to Gerhard Albert on June 1, 2015.

Rector of the Collegium Germanicum in Rome

Since July 2015 he has taken over the management of the Collegium Germanicum in Rome.
