Savarinathan Michael Augustine (born June 12, 1933 in Kovilanur , † November 4, 2017 in Pondicherry ) was an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore .

Life

Michael Augustine studied philosophy and theology at the Joseph Seminary in Tiruchirapalli and was ordained a priest on April 15, 1961 for the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. After working at the Small Seminar in Pondicherry, he completed a philosophy degree at the l'Institut Catholique de Paris. In 1965 he became professor of philosophy at the Pontifical St. Peter Seminary in Bangalore and was its rector from 1974 to 1978.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 30, 1978 auxiliary bishop in Madras and Mylapore and titular bishop of Bararus . The secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , ordained him episcopal on March 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Venmani S. Selvanather , Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, and Anthony Rayappa Arulappa , Archbishop of Madras and Mylapore. He chose Fiat as his motto .

On June 19, 1981, he was appointed Bishop of Vellore by Pope John Paul II . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore on February 18, 1992. On June 10, 2004, John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons.
