Albertina Berkenbrock (born April 11, 1919 in Imaruí , Brazil , † June 15, 1931 there ) was a Brazilian purity martyr . She was beatified by the Catholic Church .

Life

Albertina Berkenbrock grew up in a family of Catholic farmers of German descent and was an example of piety and charity. On June 15, 1931, an employee of her father tried to rape her. She struggled, which is why her attacker eventually murdered her by slitting her throat with a knife. Because of the notoriety of her virtue , she quickly became popular with the people. In 1952 the diocesan beatification process began. She is known as the Maria Goretti of Brazil. Her murderer, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, confessed to other inmates that he killed her because of her resistance - this fact was crucial in determining her martyrdom.

Albertina Berkenbrock was beatified on October 20, 2007 in the Cathedral Square of Tubarão (Santa Catarina) , Brazil . Her feast day in the liturgy is June 15 .
