Second largest Catholic Church in the world

The Catedral Basílica Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida ( German  Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Appeared Conception ) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Aparecida .

history

Aparecida is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Brazil and receives eight million pilgrims annually. The place name itself means "appeared" and indicates an apparition of Mary in 1717. The construction of the church began in 1955 to relieve a smaller basilica whose space was no longer sufficient for the pilgrims. The church should not be confused with the cathedral of the same name in Brasília , which is better known around the world, but significantly smaller. The new building was consecrated in 1980 by John Paul II , who elevated it to a minor basilica in 1981 . In 1984 the basilica was designated a national catholic shrine to Pope Benedict XVI. awarded the Golden Rose during his visit in 2007 . In 2016 the church was elevated to the status of cathedral of the diocese.

Building

The church was built from 1955 in the neo-Romanesque style. The church tower (Torre Brasília) is 100 meters high, the dome of the building measures 70 meters. The monumental structure encloses an area of almost 18,000 square meters. Inside the church there is space for 45,000 people. The basilica in Aparecida is the largest church in the world after St. Peter's Basilica . Only the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba encloses a larger area, but this was built as a mosque and would have an even larger area than St. Peter's Basilica.
