Antoine Frédéric Ozanam (born April 23, 1813 in Milan , † September 8, 1853 in Marseille ) was a French scholar. He is a blessed of the Catholic Church.

Life

Frédéric Ozanam came from a family of originally Jewish origin who had converted to Christianity in the 16th century . The mathematician Jacques Ozanam († 1718) was a relative. Frédéric spent his childhood in Milan. The conservative Catholic clergyman Abbé Noirot had a major influence on his intellectual development. In 1831 Ozanam published a pamphlet against the early socialist ideas of Henri de Saint-Simon with the title Réflexions sur la doctrine de Saint-Simon .

While he was in Paris law studies, he published numerous articles in the same Catholic sheets. Ozanam had taken up the ideas of Vincent von Paul , who, in response to the specific need, founded Caritas brotherhoods in the parishes in which women organized themselves to help the poor and the sick. On the threshold of the industrial age, Ozanam recognized the need for organized Caritas and founded a Caritas fraternity as a student. The Vincent Conferences and Communities that are still active today emerged from his initiative .

In 1836 he received his doctorate from the law faculty in Paris and in 1838 he also received his doctorate in literary studies with a study on Dante , with which he achieved great fame. In 1839 he became professor of economics at the University of Lyon and in 1840 assistant professor of literature at the Faculté des Lettres of the Sorbonne in Paris. The following year he married Amélie Soulacroix. In 1846 he became a corresponding member of the historical class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

He died on September 8, 1853 in Marseille. He was buried in the crypt of the Church of St-Joseph-des-Carmes of the Institut Catholique de Paris .
