Leonardo Ulrich Steiner OFM (born November 6, 1950 in Forquilhinha , State of Santa Caterina ) is a Brazilian religious , theologian and Archbishop of Manaus .

Life

Leonardo Ulrich Steiner, 13th child of 16 children of a German-born immigrant family and nephew of Paulo Evaristo Arns Cardinal OFM, entered on 20 January 1972, the religious order of the Franciscans in. On August 2, 1976, he made his profession . From 1973 to 1978 he studied philosophy and theology in Petrópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro. On January 21, 1978 he received the sacrament of ordination by the Archbishop of São Paulo , Paulo Evaristo Cardinal Arns OFM. He worked as a trainer and teacher in the order, at the same time he graduated in education in 1981/82 . From 1987 to 1994 he was the master of novices in his religious province of the Immaculate Conception in São Paulo. In 1995 he graduated from a philosophical doctoral studies at the Pontifical University Antonianum and in 2001 with the work "The concept of God with Bernhard Welte" doctorate . Leonardo Ulrich Steiner was Secretary General of the Franciscan University Antonianum in Rome from 1999 to 2003. In 2003 he returned to Brazil and was professor at the Philosophical University of São Boaventura (Instituto de Filosofia São Boaventura) in Cristo Rei / Curitiba. He was also vicar of the Franciscan parish Senhor Bom Jesus in Curitiba, Paraná state. Between 1997 and 2003 he held several priestly holiday replacements in Vechta and Schwaz .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on February 2, 2005 as prelate of the territorial prelature of São Félix , based in São Félix do Araguaia in the state of Mato Grosso, and successor to the liberation theologian Pedro Casaldáliga Plá . He received his episcopal consecration on April 16, 2005, the Archbishop of São Paulo, Paulo Evaristo Cardinal Arns OFM; Co- consecrators were Angélico Sândalo Bernardino , Bishop of Blumenau , and Heinrich Timmerevers , Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Münster . In May 2011 he was elected General Secretary of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil (CNBB) for a term of four years . In 2015 he was re-elected for a second term.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on September 21, 2011 titular bishop of Thisiduo and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Brasília .

On November 27, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Manaus. The inauguration took place on January 31 of the following year.
