The Basilica of Our Lady of Luján ( La Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Luján ) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in the Argentine pilgrimage site of Luján . It was built between 1887 and 1935 on the model of European cathedrals.

history

The Marian pilgrimage of Luján originated in the 17th century. At that time, a wagon that transported a statue of the Virgin Mary along with other goods is said to have got stuck in the mud. Only when the statue was unloaded could the journey continue. As a result, a chapel was built for the image of Mary in 1685. Soon there were reports of healings and answers to prayer, so that the flow of pilgrims increased and, after further previous buildings, today's large pilgrimage church was built. Up to two million pilgrims take part in the great pilgrimage at the beginning of October every year.

Building

The pilgrimage church is a neo-Gothic basilica with a double tower facade. The miraculous image is located above the main altar under a ciborium . 16 statues of apostles and evangelists are attached to the outer facade. The height of the tower is 106 m, the length of the structure 104 m, the width 68.5 m. 13 bells from Milan hang in the towers. On November 15, 1930 she was given by Pope Pius XI. the title Basilica minor bestowed.
