The Roman Catholic Diocese of León in Nicaragua ( Latin Dioecesis Leonensis in Nicaragua , Spanish diócesis de Leon de Nicaragua ) is an in Nicaragua located Roman Catholic diocese , based in León . It includes the two departments of León and Chinandega .

history

With the Apostolic Constitution Equum reputamus , Pope Clement VII founded the Diocese of León en Nicaragua on November 3, 1534 from cession of territory from the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan diocese.

It became part of the ecclesiastical province of Lima on February 11, 1547 and remained so until December 16, 1743 when it became part of the ecclesiastical province of Guatemala . On February 28, 1850 it gave part of the territory to the diocese of San José de Costa Rica .

On December 2, 1913, it lost part of the territory to the diocese of Granada , the Vicariate Apostolic Bluefields and the Archdiocese of Managua , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan. Another part of the territory it lost on December 17, 1962 to the diocese of Estelí .
