The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica ( lat. : Archidioecesis Sancti Iosephi in Costa Rica ) is one in Costa Rica situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in San José .

history

The Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica was founded on February 28, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. established with the Apostolic Constitution Christianae religionis from cessions of territory of the Diocese of León en Nicaragua as the Diocese of San José de Costa Rica . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Guatemala as a suffragan .

On February 16, 1921, the Diocese of San José de Costa Rica gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Diocese of Alajuela and the establishment of the Vicariate Apostolic Limón . On the same day it was made by Pope Benedict XV. with the Apostolic Constitution Praedecessorum raised to the archbishopric.

On August 19, 1954, the Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica was part of its territory to the founding of the Apostolic Constitution fugit Neminem erected Diocese of San Isidro de El General from. Another area assignment on 24 May 2005 on the establishment of the Apostolic Constitution contingit Saepe erected Diocese of Cartago .
