The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cartagena ( lat. : Archidioecesis Carthaginensis in Columbia , span. : Arquidiócesis de Cartagena ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Cartagena .

history

Santa María Cathedral in Cartagena

The Archdiocese of Cartagena was established on April 24, 1534 by Pope Clement VII from cession of territory from the Diocese of Panamá as the Diocese of Cartagena . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . On March 22, 1564, the diocese of Cartagena was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santafé en Nueva Granada as a suffragan. The Diocese of Cartagena gave up on August 31, 1804 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Antioquía .

On June 20, 1900, the Diocese of Cartagena was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Cartagena gave up parts of its territory on June 20, 1912 to establish the Mission sui juris San Andrés y Providencia . Further assignments of territory took place on June 12, 1924 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Sinú , on July 7, 1932 to establish the Diocese of Barranquilla and on November 20, 1954 to establish the Diocese of Montería . On April 25, 1969, the Archdiocese of Cartagena gave up parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Magangué and Sincelejo .
