The Apostolic Vicariate of San José del Amazonas ( lat. : Apostolicus Vicariatus Sancti Iosephi de Amazones ) is in the northeast of Peru located Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate with headquarters in Iquitos .

history

Pope Pius XII In 1944 commissioned the French-speaking Franciscans in Canada (Franciscans of the Province of Saint-Joseph, Québec ), who had to break off their mission in Japan due to the Second World War , with the mission in the lowlands of northeast Peru, along the border with Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador. On July 13, 1945 , the Apostolic Prefecture of San José del Amazonas was established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of San León del Amazonas, today's Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos . The name of the Franciscan Province was transferred to the prefecture. On July 3, 1955, the prefecture was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate.
