The Archdiocese of Florencia ( Latin Archidioecesis Florentiae , Spanish Archidiócesis de Florencia ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Florencia .
history
The diocese of Florencia was on February 8, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Caquetá as Apostolic Vicariate Florencia . The Vicariate Apostolic Florencia gave on December 9, 1985 parts of its territory to establish the Vicariate Apostolic San Vicente-Puerto Leguízamo . On November 30, 1996, the Vicariate Apostolic Florencia was raised to a diocese by Pope John Paul II with the Papal Bull Quo expeditius and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Ibagué as a suffragan .
Pope Francis elevated the diocese of Florencia to an archdiocese on July 13, 2019 and subordinated the dioceses of Mocoa-Sibundoy and San Vicente del Caguán as suffragan dioceses . At the same time, the previous bishop Omar de Jesús Mejía Giraldo was appointed first archbishop .
