José Luis Serna Alzate

José Luis Serna Alzate IMC (born February 17, 1936 in Aranzazu , † September 28, 2014 in Pereira ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Líbano-Honda .

Life

José Luis Serna Alzate joined the religious order of Consolata Missionaries and studied philosophy at the Consolata Missionaries' seminary in Turin and theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on December 23, 1961 in Rome . Serna Alzate was pastor of the Cathedral of Florencia , the provincial capital of Caquetá . He was a traveling missionary in Caqueta and worked for the missionary work of his order in Colombia. He was the general director of the Mission in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on November 15, 1978 Vicar Apostolic of Florencia and Titular Bishop of Cartennae . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Agnelo Rossi , ordained him episcopal on December 7th of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Lucas Moreira Neves OP , Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity .

The Pope elevated the Vicariate Apostolic to a diocese on December 9, 1985 and Serna became the first Bishop of Florencia. On July 8, 1989, he was appointed Bishop of Líbano-Honda .

On July 12, 2002, John Paul II accepted his premature, health-related resignation. Serna died in the Colombian city of Pereira in late September 2014.

Act

In the 1980s, José Luis Serna Alzate was the first High Commissioner for Peace to be appointed by President Belisario Betancur after signing a peace agreement with the Colombian guerrilla movement FARC-EP . Time and again he campaigned for the peace process with the FARC. Serna Alzate has been charged several times by the public prosecutor for his peace efforts and for alleged cooperation with illegal armed groups, especially the FARC; the attempts were unsuccessful.
