The South Waikato District is one for Region Waikato counting management unit in New Zealand . The district council, called the South Waikato District Council , is located in the city of Tokoroa , as is the district administration.

Geographical location

With 1819 km² of pure land, the district is in the middle of the districts in the Waikato region based on their size. With 22,074 inhabitants counted in 2013, the district has a population density of 12.1 inhabitants per km².

To the west of the district border the Waipa District and the Otorohanga District . In the north, this is done by the Matamata-Piako District , in the south by the Taupo District and in the east by the Western Bay of Plenty District , which is already part of the Bay of Plenty region , and the Rotorua Lakes district , which is almost half each part of the Waikato and region the region Bay of Plenty belongs. The district is located in a mountain landscape up to almost 800  m high, which tapers to the northwest into a hilly landscape with a long valley extending towards Matamata .

In addition to the administrative capital Tokoroa, which has around 13,500 inhabitants, the city of Putaruru with around 3,750 inhabitants is one of the larger towns in the district.

The summers are warm and sometimes humid, while the winters are mild. The preferred wind direction is west to southwest, the precipitation is between 1400 and 1500 mm and the sunshine duration is 1900 hours per year.

Population development

Of the 22,074 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 6762 were of māori origin (30.6%). This means that 1.1% of the country's Māori population lived in the South Waikato District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 23,800  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 70.4% said they were European, 32.6% said they had Māori roots, 12.1% came from the islands of the Pacific region and 3.1% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 14.1% of the population said they were born overseas and 7.4% of the population spoke Māori , 20.0% among the Māori .

The South Waikato District itself is divided into three wards , the Tokoroa Ward with six Councilors , the Putaruru Ward with three and the Tirau Ward with one. Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the ten councilors are re-elected every three years.

economy

The mainstay of the economy is cattle breeding in the northwest and forestry in the southeast of the district. The entire area is conveniently located, as the three largest towns are connected to New Zealand's main highway connection, State Highway 1 . The district had a gross domestic product (GDP) of NZ $ 995 million in 2016 .

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which crosses the district from the north in a south-westerly direction and runs through Tokoroa . In the south of the district, State Highway 30 runs in an east-west direction along the district boundary. The State Highway 35 begins in Tokoroa and leaves at Mangakino the district. Other State Highways run in the northern part of the district, such as State Highways 5 , 27 and 28 .

Attractions

The Talking Poles Trail , which has existed since 1997, is a tourist attraction . Since that time "were over 40 Talking Poles " (Talking piles) in Tokoroa erected.
