Pahiatua is a rural town in the Tararua District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The city is located around 22 km southeast of Palmerston North and around 56 km north-northeast of Masterton in the plain of the Mangatainoka River , which passes the city on its west side. The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs through Pahiatua and connects the city with Eketahuna , around 24 km further south-west, and Woodville , around 14 km north, and Dannevirke , around 35 km north-east.
history
Pahiatua was founded in 1881 and its first settler was John Hall . In 1944, Polish refugees were resettled in a former prisoner-of-war camp one kilometer outside the city.
In 2006 Pahiatua celebrated its 125th anniversary.

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,412 inhabitants, 5.7% fewer than in the 2006 census.
