Eketahuna is a small village in the Tararua District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
When the place was founded in 1872, it was called Mellenskov , but was renamed Eketahuna a short time later . The name Eketahuna comes from the Māori language and translates as "to run onto a sandbar".
geography
The village is located about 35 km north of Masterton directly on New Zealand State Highway 2 , which connects the place with Dannevirke in the north. The place is embedded in the wide plain of the Makakahi River and it is around 10 km to the eastern foothills of the Tararua Range . The railway connection of the Palmerston North – Gisborne Line runs through the place , which connects Eketahuna with the economic area around Wellington in the south, via Palmerston North with Auckland and to the northeast with the east coast of the North Island.
history
In the years 1870 and 1872, many Scandinavian settlers came to the Masterton area , lived there for a short time, and moved north. Some of you were involved in the establishment of Eketahuna in 1872. They cleared the bush and turned the land into farmland. On April 8, 1889, the railway line reached the place, which helped it to an economic boom. In 1907, Eketahuna was finally given borough status. With the later reorganization of the administrations and districts of the country, the place lost its independent administration and thus became meaningless.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 444 inhabitants, 2.6% less than in the 2006 census.
