The Arawak Indians had some settlements there for a long time. Petroglyphs are still found throughout the region, testifying to the presence of the indigenous people. In 1620 the area was settled by Europeans. In 1624 it was named San Agustín de Guacara .

On February 20, 1694 the settlement was officially declared as aldea de blancos y castaños (mixed race), with which the officials of the conquerors wanted to achieve a differentiation from the Indian villages.

Today it is an important center of the automotive, mechanical engineering and textile industries, as well as an important trading and banking center.
