Eltham is a rural town in the South Taranaki District of the Taranaki Regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located about 46 km south-southeast of New Plymouth and 25 km southeast of the volcanic cone of Mount Taranaki . Stratford is 12 km north and Hawera 17 km south of the village. The Waingongoro River and the Mangawharawhara Stream flow through the village . To the east of Eltham is Lake Rotokare , a small lake surrounded by native vegetation, and to the southeast of the town is Lake Rotorangi .
history
Settlement of the area around Eltham began in the 1870s when heavily forested land, mainly north of Mountain Road, was cleared. Numerous sawmills emerged. After the forest was cleared, it was found that the land was ideal for dairy farming. In 1884, when Eltham was declared a "city", more settlers, mainly from England, moved in and let the population increase further. In 1901 Eltham was declared a borough , but in 1989 the place had to give up its independent administration in the course of the territorial reform and was assigned to the South Taranaki District .
population
Eltham is the second largest town in South Taranaki . In the 2013 census, the town had 1941 inhabitants, 2.1% fewer than in the 2006 census.
economy
Eltham's economic base is the dairy industry. Farms banded together and formed cooperatives to market their products. Eltham is u. a. the only place in New Zealand where rennet is made, an enzyme essential for cheese production . Eltham was also the first New Zealand place to export butter to England. The main industry of the place today is cheese production. Much of the cheeses on offer in New Zealand, such as feta and camembert , are made in a factory on Bridge Street .
Other cheese products, such as the processed cheese used in hamburgers , are made at the Collingwood Street facility , the heavily redesigned former location of the Taranki Dairy Cooperative's milk powder plant . Cheese is the trademark of the place, which is why the water tower of the place was painted in 2002 and looks like a piece of cheese.
Another important industrial operation in the area is the Riverlands slaughterhouse (formerly JC Hutton's ) with another manufacturing facility in Bulls . Both plants can slaughter and process up to 1250 cattle per day.
Infrastructure
traffic
The High Street , which crosses the town center as part of New Zealand State Highway 3 , and Bridge Street , which leads west to Kaponga and joins New Zealand State Highway 45 near Opunake , were New Zealand's first paved roads.
The place is on the railway line of the North Island Main Trunk Railway .
