Kaponga and Mount Taranaki

Kaponga is a small village in the South Taranki District of the Taranaki regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Kaponga is the name of a tree fern in the Māori language that was often used for palisades .

geography

Kaponga is located around 15 km southwest of Stratford and around 16 km southeast of the summit of Mount Taranaki . The village is located on the connecting road between Eltham on New Zealand State Highway 3 about 13 km east and Opunake on New Zealand State Highway 45 , about 25 km west. The coast of South Taranaki Bight is around 17 km south of the village.

history

The village was founded in 1882. Many settlers came from Switzerland , which is why the “Swiss Club” was founded in 1952 in the village.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 303 inhabitants, 18.5% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

The village lives from agriculture. Of the numerous shops that the village once had, a 4-square supermarket, a dairy, two land supply shops, a veterinarian and a bed-and-breakfast accommodation and a pub remain. The local library is operated by the district as "LibraryPlus", which in addition to lending books also offers administrative services for the district and Internet access.

Education

The Kaponga Primary School had 104 students in 2011 and a decile rating of 4. It was founded in 1891 and merged with the schools of Kapuni and Mahoe in 2005 .

St. Patrick's School is a state-educational Catholic elementary school with 28 students and a decila rating of 5 in 2011. St. Patrick's began teaching in the local church in 1921 and moved into its own school house in February 1922.

Attractions

  • The village is known as the " Gateway to Dawson Falls " (access to Dawson Falls ), a waterfall that is about 14 km north on the east side of Mount Taranaki .
  • About 4 km north of the village is Hollands Garden , a donation to the Queen Elizabeth National Trust in 1982.
  • There is a small museum in the village itself, the Hazelwood Horse Ornament Museum , which exhibits horse-themed items collected by the Hazelwood family .
