Patea is a place in the South Taranaki District of the Taranaki regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The place is located around 25 km southeast of Hawera and around 53 km northwest of Wanganui on the Patea River , which flows into the Tasman Sea a good 2 km southeast at South Taranaki Bight . The closest town is Waverley , about eight miles east. The New Zealand State Highway 3 , which connects the place with Hawera and Wanganui , runs through Patea .

history

Patea , previously called Carlyle or Carlyle Beach by European settlers for a while , was originally closer to the mouth of the Patea River than it is today. During the New Zealand Wars , Patea was a strategically important military camp. General Cameron 's soldiers reached the estuary on January 15, 1865 and built redoubts on both sides of the river . After the end of the war, Patea became a small trading town with a market. The first plots of land were sold to settlers in 1870, founded a shipping company in 1872 and began to expand the town's port facility. To protect the port, breakwaters were built at the river mouth from 1878 onwards. The port facility was in operation until 1959.

In 1877, the Carlyle Town Board was founded to administer the place and was replaced on October 13, 1881 by the Borough Council of the place now trading under the name Patea . In March 1885 the railway connection of the Marton-New Plymouth Line , which ran via Patea , was completed.

In 1883 the Pātea Meat-Freezing Works was founded on the east bank of the Patea River . Cold stores for the storage of dairy products followed in 1901, with other expansions these developed into the Pate Freezing Co-Op , which became the main employer in South Taranaki and represented the economic basis of the place for decades. The company closed in September 1982. Several fires broke out in the ruins in February 2008. This caused severe damage and, due to the exposed asbestos insulation of the cold stores, health risks, so the city sought to demolish it. In March 2010, the site was divided into plots that were to be sold individually.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 1,098 inhabitants, 3.7% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

Patea is the center of the surrounding farm economy with sheep and milk production. In the town itself there are farms for agricultural machinery, fertilizer production and furniture production.

Education

The place has two schools. The Patea Area School is a composite school , which as of August 2015 was equipped with grades 1 to 13 and had 112 students. The primary school was founded in 1875.

The St Joseph's School is an integrated into the public education Catholic Contributing Primary School for grades 1 to 6, which numbered only 15 students in November, 2015. The school was founded in January 1904.

music

In 1984 Patea became known through the group of the Patea Māori Club and their one-hit wonder Poi E as a symbol of a new swing in Māori pop music in New Zealand.
