description

Hawke Bay is a bay on the east side of the North Island of New Zealand . Its largest extension of 100 kilometers extends from the Mahia Peninsula in the northeast to Cape Kidnappers in the southwest.

The name Hawke's Bay

Captain James Cook sailed into the bay with his sailing ship HMS Endeavor on October 12, 1769 and explored the area. Three days later he named the bay after Sir Edward Hawke , First Lord of the Admiralty (1710–1781). It is important to note that the actual bay is called Hawke Bay, while the region that surrounds it is formerly called Hawke's Bay .

Surroundings

Because of the mountain ranges that run across the island and graze the northern edge of the bay, the coastlines are narrowed and pushed back. The bay mainly consists of table-like plateaus, some of which end in steep cliffs in the sea or end on the sandy beaches.

The small town of Wairoa , seat of the Wairoa District Council , is located at the northern end of the bay at the mouth of the Wairoa River and its flood plains. The port city of Napier is on the opposite side at the southern end on the edge of a river on the flood plains. The Hawke's Bay region, which differs significantly from Hawke Bay, is located on the coast and extends inland and to the mountains.
