Marama Kahu Fox (* 1970 / 1971 in Hamilton , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand politician of the Māori Party and was from 2014 to 2018 co-chairman of her party.

Life

Marama Fox was born in Hamilton in 1970 or 1971 , but spent her childhood in Wellington and later in Christchurch , where her father Ernie Smith (Ernest Richard Smith), a Pākehā , worked as a teacher in 1971 and her mother, Frances Smith , a Māori , a play center started for children. In Christchurch, she attended Elmwood Primary School , then Heaton Intermediate School, and finally Christchurch Girls High School , where she completed her schooling. Later, as she stated in an interview, she moved to Masterton even though her experience with racism was not a good one. She met her future husband Ben Fox when she was 16 years old and at the age of 18 she had her first child of a total of nine children.

Fox has taught in Māori language schools with the aim of promoting understanding of the Māori language, culture and wisdom . She also taught in public secondary schools. She later served as an advisor to the Ministry of Education before being elected to the New Zealand Parliament.

Political commitment

On September 20, 2014, she was able to win a seat in the New Zealand Parliament through a list of her party and was elected by her party next to Te Ururoa Flavell to co-chair the Māori Party on November 3, 2014 . During her time in Parliament she was a member of the Business , Justice and Electoral , Standing Orders , and Māori Affairs Committees . On September 23, 2017, she left parliament by voting out her party and announced her resignation as co-chair of her party on September 5, 2018.

Time after politics

In 2018, Marama Fox appeared in various dance events, including the New Zealand TV show: Dancing with the Stars .

In 2018 she left her home in Masterton and separated from her husband Ben, which had already taken place a year earlier. Also in 2018, her consulting firm Marama Fox Consultancy Group Tapui collapsed, which she had only founded in October 2017. The company was no longer viable with over NZ $ 111,000 in debt  . Fox then went into hiding and evaded legal prosecution.
