Ubjerg Sogn or Udbjerg (German Uberg ) is a parish municipality (Danish. Sogn ) in North Schleswig , Denmark . It is located directly on the German-Danish border south of the city of Tønder (Eng. Tondern ). Until 1970 it belonged to Harde Tønder, Højer og Lø Herred in what was then Tønder Amt , then to Tønder Kommune in what was then Sønderjyllands Amt , which was merged into the "new" Tønder Kommune in the Syddanmark region as part of the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 .

Municipal area

The municipality of Ubjerg extends up to eight kilometers in an east-west direction, while the area in the north-south direction is nowhere wider than two kilometers. The municipality of Ubjerg covers a total of 14.8 km². The municipality has 272 residents (January 1, 2020). A little more than half of the inhabitants live in the eastern village of Sæd (Eng. Seth ), while the church village is considerably smaller. The other inhabitants live scattered on individual farms or in small groups of houses such as Sæd Mark (German Sethfeld ) or Bremsbøl (German Bremsbüll ).

During the Prussian period, Ubjerg and Sæd formed independent rural communities. The Danish cadastral system still regards this classification as a district boundary.

The area of the municipality is very flat. In the south, the watercourse of the Sønderå (dt. Süderau ) forms the state border, the land is swampy, but also partly fertile marshes . The north is shaped by the Geest , which nowhere rises higher than six meters. The Ubjerg Church is located on one of the highest points.

Because of its elongated shape, Ubjerg has numerous neighboring communities. In the west Ubjerg borders on Møgeltønder (Eng. Mögeltondern ), in the north on the rural community and town of Tønder, to the northeast on Hostrup , in the east on Burkal (Eng. Buhrkall ) and in the south on the German Süderlügum .

history

No prehistoric monuments are known, but the community must have been inhabited for a very long time. In the past, however, the area was often hit by storm surges as long as the western foreland was not thick and Vidå (German: Wiedau ) was navigable to the then port town of Tønder.

The municipality of Ubjerg belonged to the Tonderharde , which split off from the Hoyerharde in the Middle Ages. Both Harden belonged as well as the southern environs to the Tondern office , in the middle of which was Ubjerg. At times, Gut Solvig, located in the neighboring parish of Hostrup, had possessions in Sæd (Seeth) with its own jurisdiction.

Ubjerg is close to the border between Jutian and North Frisian settlement. The Frisians settled west of the community (in Neukirchen ). Since the Middle Ages, the German language has played a major role in trade and as a church language, so that German and Danish dialects are still spoken here today. If the question of national affiliation in the Duchy of Schleswig did not previously exist, it became a crucial problem in the middle of the 19th century. Like the southern region and the neighboring town of Tønder, most of the population supported the German and Schleswig-Holstein sides. After the war of 1864 , the Duchy of Schleswig became Prussian. Ubjerg was divided into the two rural communities Uberg and Seeth during the local government reform and incorporated into the Tondern district. After the formation of the districts in 1889, the communities are assigned to the Neukirchen district .

In the referendum in Schleswig about national affiliation to Germany or Denmark on February 10, 1920, 215 Ubjerger eligible to vote voted for Germany and only 43 for Denmark. The limit had already been set, however, as Ubjerg had been beaten to the first voting zone, in which only the overall result counted. From then on Ubjerg formed a parish in the new Danish office of Tønder and has since been located directly on the state border. Only after the Second World War did the German-minded Schleswig party lose its majority in the municipal council. In the local elections on November 15, 2005, the voting district Ubjerg was the stronghold of the Schleswig Party in North Schleswig with 38.2%. During the administrative reform in 1970 Ubjerg became part of the municipality of Tønder , which was considerably enlarged during the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 .

Attractions

In the community there are several farm buildings typical of the region, which are worth seeing, and are often built on high terps . The pastorate in Ubjerg is a particularly impressive thatched brick building from 1675. The Bjerremark farm just west of the church village, which today serves as a conference venue, is also very well preserved .

The church is on one of the highest points in the parish. The apse and choir are Romanesque, the nave is early Gothic.

economy

An important line of business is border trade, but transport and agriculture also play a major role. In the past, the Seether potatoes were famous far beyond the surrounding area.

traffic

The Green Coastal Road runs past the village of Sæd and connects the municipality in a north-south direction with Tønder and Niebüll and a wide area. The east-west road that runs through the entire municipality is important for local traffic.

Just east of the village of Ubjerg, the march runs past in a north-south direction. The station has been idle since 1981, but since the reactivation of the Niebüll-Tønder section in 2001 there is reasonable hope that Ubjerg will get a rail connection again.
