history

Former railway bridge on the Varberg – Ätran railway over the Ätran in the village

The city grew with the construction of the railroad. As early as 1887, the Fegen – Ätran railway , which was already connected to the Kinnared – Fegen railway in Fegen , reached the place. In 1911 the connection to the west coast could also be completed with the help of the Varberg – Ätran railway line . With the timber trade and the possibility of transshipment to the railroad, the city began to grow. Rail operations were stopped in 1961 and the former locomotive shed in Ätran was demolished in 1998. Today the bridge from 1910 over the Ätran still reminds of the local railway.

economy

The company SKAB ( Specialkarosser AB ), which produces special bodies for trucks, is based in Ätran and offers around 200 jobs. There is also a school, a gas station, a supermarket and a kiosk in town.
